My P90X Story…
I come from a family of large people. I love them (well, not all of them), but they’re largely a large group. I don’t know if genetics can truly be blamed for obesity, but I do know that being fit and healthy is a choice.
The Very Beginning
When I completed the 8th grade, I weighed in at a hefty 230 lbs. I decided that for 9th grade, I wanted to “fit in” with the other high schoolers. I basically starved myself during that summer and did between 200-1,000 crunches each night, along with jogging on my mini trampoline for 20 minutes.
I lost 50 lbs that summer, and I was ready to “fit in” during high school. Starving myself was not a very healthy way to lose weight, so of course, I gained some of it back. Not all of it, but enough to irk me – so I started a new regimen. I started jogging. I lost even more weight going into my junior year, and I was actually getting kind of healthy. I maintained that weight throughout the remainder of high school.
College Years
Working 30 hours a week while pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering at a large university means two things:
- Free gym access to the university’s awesome gym
- Loads of stress from work and class deadlines/tests
By setting my priorities correctly, I did manage to still go to the gym on a pretty regular basis. I even trained for a half-marathon one year. The next year, I ran one without training for it – ouch.
At one point, I followed Muscle & Fitness’ ‘Six Pack in Six Weeks’ program. I followed it exactly for the full 6 weeks. I didn’t get a six-pack, but I did get pretty ripped. I also acquired some gastrointestinal issues from the protein supplements I was taking. I went to see a doctor and promptly never took protein supplements again.
Time for P90X
I ordered P90X on September 17, 2010. I started the program with trepidation, but I started nonetheless. I did it… for three days. I started it up again on October 21, 2010, and did it for… 11 days. However, only 3 of those days were workout days. Hah!
Then came June 15, 2011. It was time. Time to make a change. Time to do it for real. I decided that this time, I’d do it right. I would record a video summary and take pictures of myself to display online from Day 1 to Day 90. I didn’t start posting these posts until I was 30 days into the program, to keep myself honest.
Why Did I Choose P90X?
I didn’t choose to do P90X so that I could get ripped in 90 days. I chose P90X so that I could learn to feel vibrant and learn to be truly healthy. I did it to set myself on a track for unlimited, lifelong success. I intend to keep up with P90X – and possibly other BeachBody products – for the rest of my life.
