Have you ever had a day that you thought couldn’t get any worse? You know what I’m talking about. One of those days when you have no inspiration, no creativity, and no motivation to do anything. If you still haven’t quite wrapped your mind around it, allow me to quote a prior Initech employee who got it exactly right:
So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that’s on the worst day of my life.
Hat tip to Peter Gibbons. Hopefully today was not the worst day of your life, but you’ve had your share, and you know when they were. The signs are almost always the same.
Are you able to notice when someone else is having a bad day? What about your significant other? Chances are, you know that person better than anyone else, so if anyone can debunk a bad day, it’s you. You’re probably becoming a bit overwhelmed at the point. Wait a minute, I thought you were going to help me get through a bad day! No, that’s for another day!
It seems like a daunting task – turning someone’s day around, when that day is potentially the worst day of his or her life. It seems as if it will take an act of God to turn that frown upside down. Guess what? It’s simple!
I was having one of those awful days, and it carried into today. Jessica noticed this and instantly took action. I got off of work today and headed over to her house. As soon as I arrived, she exclaimed, “I trapped a bug under the bed, and it’s big and fuzzy and hairy, and I need to you to go capture it!” Don’t let the bald mean mug fool you, I’m not the biggest fan of creepy crawlers. Reluctantly, I headed into the danger zone.
I ducked down next to the bed to assess the situation. I saw a triangular contraption allegedly keeping the critter at bay. I asked Jessica, “Is it under the Toblerone?” She responded, “No, silly!” The Toblerone was for me! She then said to me, “I know that you’ve been having a schmoopy 48 hours, so I thought I would get you something to cheer you up!”
And cheer me up, it did! Many times over! A huge smile spread across my face, and my bad day was turned completely upside down. All it took was a little love, and a candy bar! Now, I should have you know, it’s one of the monster Toblerones, not one of the wimpy small ones. But the point is, Jessica saw the opportunity, and she went for it. It was a simple gesture, but a powerful one. It showed that she cared, and she was willing to do something about it. Lessons learned aside, I am the luckiest man in the world.
What can you do to brighten someone’s day today? You know when your significant other is in a rut, so rescue them! It’s not as hard as you think it is. As a matter of fact, if you’re trying at all, you’re going to make a difference. Improve someone else’s day today, and they’ll be there for you when you’re in need.
