When You Wish Upon A Star…

JessicaThis is my wife.

And that beautiful pavilion in the backdrop is where we were married.

As Jessica and I traverse through this crazy thing called life, we encounter lots of cynics.  Just yesterday, she told someone at church that we got married at Disney World, and the girl responded, “UGH!  Lucky!”  She then sulked and walked off.

Here’s the deal:  you can either wish upon a star and then wait for the magic to happen, or you can wish upon that same, twinkling star – and you can make the magic happen. We chose the latter.  But there’s much more to it than just getting married at Disney World.

Casey and Jessica Magic Kingdom

We made it happen, but not without the spiritual, emotional, and financial support of Jessica’s parents.  Kris and David paid for nearly everything having to do with our wedding, including our late-night snack of chocolate-dipped Mickey pops – which, if you haven’t had them, book the trip to Disney JUST for the Mickey pops.

Magic Kingdom

You see, our marriage was more than a trip to the most magical place on earth.  It was a symbol of the way we love each other.  It is a magical place, but that magic doesn’t start until you make the choice to go get some for yourself.  Jessica and I don’t rely on the magic of love to keep our relationship (and now our marriage) together – we choose to keep it together.  We choose to love each other, and we choose to respect, honor, and cherish each other for as long as we both shall live.

We aren’t “lucky” that we got married at Disney World, and we aren’t “lucky” that we have a fantastic relationship.  We aren’t “lucky” that we have excellent communication skills.  We choose these things.  We are making our lives together.  It’s magical, but we’re making the magic.

Casey and Jessica Buzz Lightyear

I love this photo.  I love my wife.  I love the good times we’ve had together, the good times we’re having together, and the good times we’ll continue to have together for the rest of our lives.  We leave nothing to fate.  We admit our faults and build on them.  We build each other up, and we will never tear each other down.

There is not another woman in the world that can make me as happy as Jessica, and there’s not another woman in the world who deserves my love the way Jessica does.  As her dad said at the wedding, “You two are amazing alone, and you will be spectacular together.”

Casey Jessica Mickey Hats

Oh yeah, I haven’t even yet mentioned that our wedding was RIDICULOUS.  I wore Steampunk robot cufflinks, Jessica wore a purple dress and cowboy boots, we had confetti cannons, the organist BLARED Phantom of the Opera as I walked down the aisle and played Put On Your Sunday Shoes as Jessica walked down, he played Postcards from Far Away and Life in Technicolor as people filtered in and out, we read our vows from our Android phones, we had balloons, balloons, and more balloons, and we rode away in a bicycle rickshaw for two.  We had donuts instead of cake.

This is only a SMALL taste of our wedding, and I haven’t even mentioned the best part yet.  Jonathan EFFING Canlas photographed the whole thing.  He. is. freaking. AMAZING.  He was really the star of the show, and when we get the photos, you’ll see why.  He really is the best in the world at what he does.

The other stars of the day were Elizabeth (the florist), and Amy et al.  Amy. was. AMAZING.  I know, I did that period/capitalization thing twice.  She deserves it.  She made our wedding seamless and awesome, and she did it all with a smile on her face.  All we had to do was show up.  Amy is freaking awesome.

Casey Jessica Guitar Hero

We met on May 16, 2008, and we played Guitar Hero all night long.  The day before our wedding, we found an arcade in TomorrowLand that had a GH machine, and we played Paint It Black.  The day I met Jessica, I knew I wanted to marry her.  I knew there was something special about her that I wouldn’t find in any other girl.

Now I get to wake up next to the love of my life every day.  I get to make her happier every day.  We both get to enjoy life as much as we possibly can, not because of the magic of love, but because we choose to love each other.  It’s the best choice I’ll ever make.
